Since 2011, Bremen has been a "Capital of Fair Trade". After participating in a nationwide competition, set up by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in cooperation with ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL, Bremen outmatched 61 other municipalities and cities and was awarded the title "Capital of Fair Trade".
However, fair trade in Bremen has a much longer history, since the city can look back on a century-old tradition of trade relations. In an increasingly globalized world, Bremen is willing to take responsibility for a sustainable development, which is also to the benefit of our partners in countries of the global South. A multitude of actors share one common goal of placing fair trade in the middle of society. The way has been paved. More than 85 projects from different parts of society led to the winning of the competition. Yet, sitting back and relax is not an option. Numerous projects, including a fair trade exhibition or the creation of Germany’s first fair trade Rap, have been realised. A new strategy has been developed in order to ensure that each part of society, for example the youth, becomes conscious about fair trade and its meanings.
